Hi all, and welcome back here after a while. The last time I talked to you (and some time before that), I was writing about my Nacatl Sundial deck, better known as Intihuatana. After writing that, the deck went through a lot of changes and I’m still not where I want to be. I changed the deck around so much that I can’t even call it Intihuatana!

Thran Utopia #36: Limited Retrospect

Last week I told you about a pending draft that took place the same night my article went up. The draft was a great deal of fun and I ended in second place after starting out 0-2 (1-2, 1-2). I initially was planning on mentioning the draft as the first part of my article, but I realized I would be better of using my draft as a means to falsify/verify the assumptions and hypotheses I discussed last week. Be prepared for a not-quite-ordinary draft/tournament report!

Last week I made a promise to revisit Intihuatana this week. Turns out that’s not entirely true. I will give you a deck, but it’ll have to wait until next week. You see, the moment this article goes up is around the time me and my friends will be drafting Innistrad. I love drafting; I love it so much that the last time we drafted, it was Rise of the Eldrazi! Yes, it’s sad, isn’t it? Still, every draft is such fun and a great way to revisit old Magic memories and make some new ones. We’ve opened two foil Akroma‘s during Time Spiral drafts (back-to-back), and last time we had a foil Emrakul and a Kozilek. To make a long story short: this week will be about draft: draft in general, Innistrad in particular, and how my group tends to draft.

You’re a Designer, Harry! #21 – Not of This Worlds

O.K., so somehow, I had ended up arm-wrestling Mark Rosewater, Head Designer for Magic: The Gathering. To explain how I got here, let’s go back in time further than necessary – because more than just that happened when I attended the 2011 Magic World Championships in San Francisco.

Normally, I wouldn’t go to a Magic: The Gathering event larger than a Friday Night Magic at a local game store, so attending Grand Prixes, Pro Tours, PTQs, and all that jazz is foreign to me. However, this year, Worlds just so happened to be held in San Francisco – right where I work every weekday. I just had to jump on this opportunity. Especially when, considering the announcement Wizards made regarding Worlds, this is the end of the Worlds as we know it.

Once upon a time there was a guy named Toshiro Umezawa. Being a legendary creature, I built a deck around him. (That’s basically all there is to it with legends.) Since I’m having a hard time coming up with new decks right now – it appears I’m in a Magic rut – I wanted to share today my Toshiro Umezawa deck, the one without Toshiro Umezawa. It’s called Tragedy Bound nowadays and still one of the most fun decks I have.
